COOL! Type Quiz: Helvetica or Arial?

Ironic Sans presents a fun little quiz for the typographically inclined - So you think you can tell Arial from Helvetica? Try it! Through 20 logos originally designed with Helvetica, redone in Arial... blasphemy? Perhaps... but, a fun challenge anyhow.

COOL! Font Game...

A little over a year ago I blogged about The Rather Difficult Font Game... well since then, the game has been updated with some additional fonts for you to challenge, as well its now being hosted on I Love Typography. Give the game a try for yourself and see how well you do, here - I still can't seem to manage to get them all, my best is still 33/34. Perhaps, I'll give it another shot later. ;)

Thanks for the link Beth!

The Rather Difficult Font Game...

I've been having lots of fun with this latest online font quiz, The Rather Difficult Font Game created by the author of Say It Ain't Slow: A simple blog about high performance websites... I have yet to achieve a perfect score, the highest I've managed is 33 out of 34... I always seem to mess up one of the san serifs (and I have to admit I wasn't familiar with some of the fonts used). Anyhow, try it out for yourself and see if you can join the ranks of those in the hall of fame with a perfect 34/34, check it out at http://ajax.sayitaintslow.com/fontgame/ - enjoy!

Recommended Reading | Small Caps

There's a great little article by Alec Julien over on the i love typography blog about small caps. I would definitely recommend that you take the time to read through the article, it's quite informative and I'm sure that you'll learn a thing or two you didn't know before. Check it out here - enjoy!

COOL! Short Video on YouTube about Typography and Font Design...

As a follow-up to my 'Fontastic Fun' post, check out the above (made for TV) YouTube video short on typography and font design featuring interviews with Steven Heller, Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones. It's a rather basic overview but, worth watching anyhow. Check it out on YouTube here.

Fontastic Fun!

Last week I came across this awesome little font quiz via Michael Surtee's blog, DesignNotes. In ten short questions you can see how familiar (or unfamiliar) you are with some of (what should be) the most commonly used fonts around these days. Sadly, the average score is only 58%... which is truly sad considering that the sample texts generally give you enough clues to make an informed guess (if you don't know your fonts). Take the test and see how you score here.

Thanks for the link Michael! Cheers!

(FYI, I only scored 9/10... I'm blaming it on the fact that when I took the test it was still early and I hadn't had my coffee yet... ;P)

Recommended Viewing | Fifteen Minutes of Fame via Design Observer...

There's a great post over on Design Observer - Fifteen Minutes of Fame, which I highly recommend you check out. Following closely on the popularity of the past summer's blockbuster hit documentary film, Helvetica - the folks over at Design Observer have compiled a tongue-in-cheek list for the cast of Graphic Design: The Movie (a fictional film as far as I am aware)... the casting is ongoing with the list being updated periodically as readers add their submissions.

Who would you want to portray you in a documentary film? An interesting question to ponder... ;) Anyhow, check out the original post on Design Observer here - enjoy!

Watch Helvetica: The Movie - ONLINE NOW!

If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch the Helvetica documentary film online now via Google Video here - enjoy! Via Computer Arts Daily, via Best Documentaries Online blog.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Gary Hustwit (who was very pleasant), it appears that the video was uploaded illegally and Google Video will be pulling the video from their servers shortly (I had a suspicion ;P).

If you're still interested in watching the film, I suggest that you look into purchasing the DVD. Visit the Helvetica Film shop at http://www.helveticafilm.com/shop.html - Cheers!

Helvetica Film Deluxe DVD Boxset…

I received my copy of the Helvetica Film DVD Boxset which I blogged about a while back (08/17/2007). I'm such a sucker for these 'deluxe' packages, included in this boxset was the DVD, three letterpress prints, a still from the film signed by Gary Hustwit, one "I love Helvetica" badge, one "I hate Helvetica" badge and a piece of vintage Helvetica metal type (actually it's Helvetica Bold Extended), from the Stempel Foundry, c.1970s (I got a lowercase Z). I'm looking forward to watching the film again, as well as checking out the DVD extra features (95 minutes of bonus interviews), stay tuned for more to come - cheers!

Helvetica Film Winnipeg Showing - Round 2!

The 'Helvetica Film' is back by popular demand for another round of screenings at Cinemateque. The film will be on screen from November 13-15, so if you weren't able to catch it the first time around, now is your chance! For more information about showtimes, etc. visit the Cinemateque website.

Helvtica Film Winnipeg Show

'Helvetica - A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit' showed tonight at Cinemateque in Winnipeg. Sadly, there was only one showing of the film, which was sold-out in record time. Apparently, many people that wanted to see the film were unable to see it. Overall, I enjoyed the film and thought that it was well put together. I'll reserve my full review for after I've had the chance to review the DVD Boxset. I can't wait to get it! Cheers!

*Note: Apparently the theatre plans to run the film for three nights some time in November... so don't fret if you wanted to see the film but weren't able to this time around, you'll get another chance soon enough!
