Recommended Reading | ideasonideas - Running Your Own Race...

If you're a designer or working in the creative industry, I'd highly recommend that you take a few minutes to visit ideasonideas, where Eric Karjaluoto (of Smashlab) discusses design, brands and experience. In particular I recommend that you read one of Eric's recent posts entitled, Running Your Own Race.
I found the article to be quite interesting, and felt that Eric made some keen observations and raises some interesting points (thanks for sharing your thoughts Eric). Anyhow, I'll let you decide for yourself... go and read the article at ideasonideas, here. I'd welcome you to make a comment here after reading it. Enjoy!

WICKED! Ashley Wood's Nom de Plume...

Internationally acclaimed artist, Ashley Wood released Nom de Plume today, the faceless commander of the Dirty Deeds platoon. Limited to only 50, the Nom de Plume 12" figure was to go on sale on June 25th Hong Kong time and was available on Bambalandstore.com - apparently the figure was sold-out in 20 minutes! From Ash Wood's blog:
Re: Nom
Sorry for the folks who missed out, but remember before you get angry at the run size, these are not like books that are printed in mass very quickly, each Nom is hand made, there are no machines making the cloths on auto, the paint is not a quick spray job, it all takes time to make a cool toy. The logistics of Nom dictated 50, hopefully we can up the run's on editions as we move along.
Amazing... keep 'em coming Ash! Cheers!

Recommended | Free Rice... for the UN World Food Program

With the many recent natural disasters and war(s) making the news headlines on a daily basis, it's refreshing to see something online which could potentially make a real difference. www.freerice.com is a website which combines vocabulary training with the giving of rice.
The concept is simple, for every word that you get right, they'll donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program... to date, 31,214,178,130 grains (over 31 billion grains) of rice have been donated. I have to say that the game itself is rather addicting, and you could easily spend an afternoon expanding your vocabulary while donating to a worthy cause. I suggest you give it a try for yourself... I'm sure that you'll manage to donate at least 20 grains of rice! Visit http://www.freerice.com/ - enjoy!
Thanks to Rick Strong for posting this link to the GDC Listserve - cheers!

Recommended | Candy Collective E-mag...

Happy St. Patrick's Day everybody! In light of the fact that it's an Irish holiday I felt it was appropriate to draw your attention to Candy, the digital publication of the Candy Collective.
Candy is an independently produced digital magazine created to showcase the best in Irish and international culture, creativity and God knows what else (excerpt from Issue 1). I've been enjoying the publication for some time now and was quite excited to hear that they've just released the first two issues of the second volume. I highly recommend that you check it out, be warned, some of the issues are rather hefty downloads (40MB+) but well worth the wait.
Check it out at http://www.candycollective.com/issues.html - enjoy! Via Veer: The Skinny

COOL! The History of Visual Communication...

Excerpt from the website introduction page:
This website attempts to walk you through the long and diverse history of a particular aspect of human endeavour: The translation of ideas, stories and concepts that are largely textual and/or word based into a visual format, i.e. visual communication.
Wikipedia defines visual communication as: Visual communication is the communication of ideas through the visual display of information. Primarily associated with two dimensional images, it includes: art, signs, photography, typography, drawing fundamentals, colour and electronic resources. Recent research in the field has focused on web design and graphically oriented usability. It is part of what a graphic designer does to communicate visually with the audience.
I've only taken a few minutes to look at the site but, it seems to be quite a good resource for students of design/communication as well as for instructors. I highly recommend that you take some time to check it out, visit http://www.citrinitas.com/history_of_viscom/index.html - enjoy!
